  • Welcome to the Municipality of Shellharbour Council

Shellharbour is a City of about 60,000 people, located approximately 100 kilometres from the centre of Sydney, in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia. Our 154 square kilometres span an area of great natural beauty, stretching west from the picturesque coastline to rolling pastures, against the majestic backdrop of the Illawarra escarpment.

The Shellharbour Local Government Area was formed in 1859. It achieved City status some 136 years later, on 1 January, 1996. Our Council operates on a ward system, with Councillors elected to represent residents in specific areas of the city. The Mayor is elected by all voters in the city.

The Councillors and Council staff have a close relationship with the community and we encourage people to have their say on what we’re doing. By law, anyone can attend Council meetings and, if they register beforehand, can address the Councillors on an issue up for discussion. Community forums are held on many issues.

Our shared Vision is a sustainable city: communities living in harmony, balancing nature’s beauty with quality rural and urban environments.

Council is delivering the Vision through a Strategic Plan which conserves and enhances our natural and built environments; provides programs which foster a safe, healthy, informed and caring community; and builds a strong and diverse local economy for generations to come.

  • Welcome to the Municipality of Wollongong Council

The Wollongong City Council area was created in 1947 when four local government areas - the Shire of Bulli, Shire of Central Illawarra, Municipality of Wollongong, and the Municipality of Northern Illawarra - amalgamated to form the City of Greater Wollongong, which today is simply known as the City of Wollongong.

Since the city’s incorporation in 1947, Wollongong City Council has grown into one of the largest local government authorities in Australia, employing more than 1,000 staff with an annual budget expenditure nearing $200 million.

Wollongong City Council’s vision is to be a community focused local authority of excellence, and we work hard to fulfil that goal. Our mission is to enhance our community’s lifestyle and environment through effective leadership, community involvement and commitment to service.
