BELLAMBI resident Noel Gleeson recently won a cricket bat signed by the NSW team – and promptly gave it away.
Mr Gleeson won the bat through Southern Independent Publishers’ promotion of the NSW v South Australia Match at Fairy Meadow, on Australia Day. He was presented with his prize by the NSW captain and Australian Test player, Simon Katich.
But instead of displaying the valuable memorabilia, Mr Gleeson has donated it to a fundraiser being held for the McCue family of Albion Park who recently discovered father Bernard is dying of liver cancer.
Twenty-nine-year-old Mr McCue and his wife, Leah, have three children under 4.
Mr Gleeson contacted the organisers and the bat will be auctioned at the February 13 event. “I really haven’t got any use for it,” he said. “I’ve got nowhere to display it so I thought ‘if I can’t use it, I’m sure he (Bernard) can’.”
Mr Gleeson read about the McCue’s plight in The Lake Times and wanted to help.
Fundraiser organiser Ethan Sinclair, a good mate of Mr McCue’s, said the event had sold out.
It is being held at Wollongong’s Portofino Function Centre and Mr Sinclair said many others had donated auction items including signed AC/DC and Powderfinger guitars and a signed Socceroos jersey.
