THE Historical Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS) and Shellharbour City Council will be hosting the second annual Wings Over Illawarra open day next month, giving the public the opportunity to see some of the great pioneering aircraft of years gone by.
The day will feature displays of historical aircraft, vintage cars, motorbikes, antique farm machinery and crowd favourites including the Neptune Bomber and Catalina.
Visitors to the event will also be able to view ‘guest’ aircraft from the RAAF, Temora Aviation Museum and the HMAS Albatross, as well as demonstrations from the Defence Forces, Rural Fire Service and local model aircraft enthusiasts.
“The day provides a unique opportunity for the whole family to view up close some of the aircraft that helped shape Australia’s aviation history,” HARS Museum chairman Michael Hough said.
“Guests can see first hand what’s involved in restoring these beautiful aircraft to their original flying condition.”
Shellharbour City Council director of operations and services Arthur Webster said the event was also a way to promote the airport’s facilities.
Wings Over Illawarra will be held on Saturday March 8 at the Illawarra Regional Airport, with gates opening at 9.30am.
Admission is free to some areas and $5 to other areas.
