Windang Pelicans Junior Rugby League has continued to emerge as a force in the Illawarra Toyota Junior League, once again breaking two club records – the number of teams and number of registrations for the 2008 season.
“The incredible response to junior league in this area is very heartening,” according to long-serving Windang official Warren Schofield.
Warren has seen the Pelicans continue to grow from a minnow in the competition when he joined the club 20 years ago to a real powerhouse. He has been club secretary for 13 years.
“We were delighted to have 11 teams last year, but that has swelled again to 13 for the 2008 season and just continues to grow.
“We have 175 players registered and that is just mind-blowing when you see where we were a few years ago,” Mr Schofield said.
With the continued support of the Windang Bowling Club, the club’s finances look solid and allows the club to put more money back into the players.
“But one of the real strengths of the club is the number of coaches we have here that are former Windang Pelicans players. They know the culture of the club and will continue to keep us strong.”
