WIN-WIN TO BE SEEN
RICHARD PAYNE
NSW Premier Morris Iemma joined local Labor MPs on a tour of the state’s newest gas-fired power station at Tallawarra last week, only days after announcing the privatisation of the state’s electricity services.
Describing the construction of the power station as a great example of the balance between saving the planet and the guaranteeing of jobs and prosperity for the future, Mr Iemma said the facility would create around 550 local construction positions.
“The 400-megawatt peaking power station, which will be online in time for summer 2008/09 is an example of the investment by private companies which is already happening in the NSW electricity network,” he said.
“This is an investment in the future of NSW, we are securing the state’s prosperity.
“The Illawarra is showing real leadership in using cleaner, greener technology while still providing the state with efficient energy.”
Despite the government set to receive a $15 billion windfall from the sale of the electricity services, Mr Iemma refused to verify whether the Illawarra would see a large proportion of the funding.
Reluctant to confirm details of much needed money for local health and roads services, Mr Iemma instead told waiting media, the Illawarra region “would see their fair share.”
“It’s a win-win for every NSW resident,” he said.
“We can secure our future electricity at no cost to taxpayers while freeing up vital dollars that we can invest for transport, infrastructure, health services and education services.”
Member for Shellharbour, Lylea McMahon said she supported the decision to privatise the state’s electrical services.
Ms McMahon said she intended to lobby the Premier for a proportion of the $15 billion to be spent locally.
