Cyclists from throughout the Illawarra have welcomed the news that Wollongong City Council will spend more than $2 million to improve the standard of existing footpaths and cycleways.
Last financial year, the Council spent more than $1.8 million constructing and repairing cycleways and footpaths across the city.
This year, Council will carry out cycleway and footpath improvement works in areas such as Dapto, Unanderra, Warrawong, Cordeaux Heights and West Wollongong.
“Next on the list, the Council will begin extending cycleways along the Princes Highway, Figtree, and Central Road, Unanderra,’’ the Council’s infrastructure strategy and planning manager Michael Malone said.
“We will also extend the Lake Illawarra cycleway through Fred Finch Park as part of the first stage in completing a link with Northcliffe Drive.
“Council’s first priority is to maintain our existing network of cycleway in a safe and useable condition.”
Illawarra Bicycle User’s Group president Werner Steyer said the funding filled missing links in the infrastructure.
“There is always an avenue for funding, but it’s about how they allocate it and it’s important that useable infrastructure is built,” he said.
“We still need to improve some of the routine maintenances though.
“Many of our cycleways are in need of repair, which has been lacking at times.’’
