SHELLHARBOUR Surf Life Saving Club received a helping hand courtesy of a Federal Government grant.

Federal Member for Throsby Jennie George said there were 16 recipients from the Throsby electorate in the last round of Federal Government funding for volunteer and community organisations, receiving a combined $40 000.

"These grants are great recognition for our volunteer and community organisations, which are really the glue that keeps us together," she said.

Shellharbour SLSC will put their $1439 towards two ladders and a printer/fax/scanner.

Club President Robert Mcalister said the money will be well utilised by the club, which is run completely by volunteers.

The ladders will enable club members to safely put away items such as surf skis which are stored up high to save space while the printer/fax/scanner will launch the club into the present allowing them to keep in touch with other organisations electronically and avoiding club members having to do printing etc from their own homes.

The club receives most of its necessary funding by fundraising within the community.

Mr Mcalister said they have sponsorships, host carnivals and are lucky to receive rental income from the property they own adjoining the Surf Club.

Ms George said she contacted a number of local organisations to advise them of the grant opportunity and encourages all community and volunteer organisations to look out for, and apply in, the next round of funding, which she said would be available later this year.
