ENERGY Minister Joe Tripodi visited the region last Friday to announce a $5.5 million upgrade of the Shellharbour Zone Substation.
The upgrade will help secure electricity supply to the Shellharbour area over the next 15 years.
Mr Tripodi said there is an expected growth in demand of electricity in the region of 20% over the next 15 years.
This vital infrastructure investment is about making sure Shellharbour residents have a secure supply of electricity, particularly over summer peak periods, he said.
The upgrade will increase the capacity of the substation by more than 50% according to Mr Tripodi.
Kiama MP Matt Brown said he was pleased that the state government was recognising the potential of the Shellharbour area and planning for its growth.
The state government is committed to making sure Shellharbour has the infrastructure it needs to prosper, said Mr Brown.
