Warilla FC wandering towards the future of football

Section: Sport

The rebranded Warilla Junior FC (formerly the Wanderers) launched their 2007 launch at Shellharbour Workers' on Friday night.

Guest of honour was Socceroos and Sydney FC attacking midfielder David Carney, who was a massive hit with the estimate 270 people in attendance.

"He was so accessible " he must have signed 150 soccer balls before the night was over," Warilla Junior FC president Rod Williams said.

Hot on the heels of football's success in launching the A-League, moving into the Asian Confederation and the national team's World Cup success, the Warilla Club is looking to make big strides in 2007, Williams said.

"The new name is much shorter and concise," Williams said.

"This is a new era for football in Australia and we want to embrace it."

Warilla Junior FC will field teams in ten age groups, from under 6s to under 16s, including two squads in under r9s and under 14s.

Although their numbers are small compared with some Illawarra junior clubs, Warilla punch well above their weight " their under 10s, 11s and 14s had undefeated seasons on their way to grand final wins, while the under 13s fell just short, losing their decider on penalties.

"2006 was a fantastic year for us and we just want to build on it this season," Williams said.

The club has already returned some promising results in preseason knockouts before the season proper starts on Saturday, April 14.

They have reported an increase in playing numbers from 2006.

"We have 130 kids registered for this year, which is up on 2006," Williams said.

The club has scored a major coup, as their Morley Park base will host the Illawarra Junior Grand Finals later in the year.

Warilla Junior FC is however still looking for players eligible to play in the under 12 and under 14 divisions. For further inquiries please call Rod Williams on 0423 367 947.

The Club would like to thank its major sponsors, Shellharbour Workers', Kay's Discount Tires, Wal's Pharmacy, Warilla Bowling and Recreation Club, GHood Home Loans, AMart All Sports and Paul the Shoeman.
