ILLAWARRA Premier League Squash celebrated two milestones when the competition kicked off on Wednesday.
The Illawarra District Squash Rackets Association (IDSRA), which runs the competition, is celebrating its 50th season and a new naming rights sponsor – Dapto Citizens Bowling Club.
The new competition is known as Dapto Citizens Bowling Club Men’s Premier League Squash.
Six four-man teams – Shellharbour, Dapto, Vikings and three from Wollongong TAFE – are contesting this year’s Premier League competition.
Each Wednesday, teams are paired off and play four-match rubbers. The group that wins the most games takes the competition points.
It is hoped the 50th anniversary and new major sponsor will be the catalyst for Illawarra’s return to the Sydney competition, Shellharbour captain Troy Mountford said.
“This will hopefully be the start of getting a team in the Sydney competition or attracting some Sydney-based players to the competition,” he said.
“Attracting Dapto Citizens as a naming rights sponsor is a bit of a coup for squash in the Illawarra.”
Junior clinics are held on Fridays from 4pm at 23 Lakelands Drive, Dapto. Visit www.idsra.com for more information.
