WITH ANZAC Day approaching Fred Harris of Albion Park took the time to remember his uncle, Thomas Harris, who died while fighting in the First World War.

The story goes while his Battalion was facing certain defeat on a battlefield in Germany Thomas, at only 26 years of age, bravely swept forward towards machine gun fire to take out the enemy.

He was successful in halting one advance however was shot himself in the second advance.

It was this heroism under fire that earned Thomas Harris the Victoria Cross.

As the highest possible award for valour of a serviceman in the British or Commonwealth forces it is with great pride that his nephew today remembers his own father, Thomas's Brother, presenting the award to the royal West Kent Museum.

Today Fred says his uncle Thomas's bravery remains a proud moment in his family's history.
