Do you think the Illawarra business community should have been more supportive of the Albion Park QantasLink service, which has just shut down?

The fortnightly collection of garbage has been the subject of much contention in Shellharbour of late, and this week residents will be receiving another bin to add to their collection and another fortnightly bin service.

During May, Shellharbour households will receive a lime-green lidded garden vegetation bin with a fortnightly removal to commence from July 1.

“We have received excellent feedback regarding the upcoming introduction of the new garden vegetation bin,” Shellharbour City Mayor, David Hamilton said.

“I anticipate the new bin providing a welcome improvement to our city’s waste removal service.

“It will address concerns about garden waste bags blowing away after they have been emptied while the increased frequency of pickup will result in an effective and convenient system for managing garden waste,” Cr Hamilton said.

“The material collected will then be taken to the council’s recycling facility at Dunmore and turned into rich garden mulch for the region’s parks and gardens.”

The new bin replaces the existing monthly garden waste collection where residents were required to place their garden waste in bundles or polywoven bags at the kerbside.

The lime-green lidded bin will be emptied on alternate weeks to the garbage and recycling bins.

Along with the new bin, households will also receive a collection calendar and information booklet that will explain the new service.

All current household garbage bins with blue or dark green lids are set to be replaced with red lids in order to ensure a consistent approach to bin identification. To enable the bin lids to be changed, residents are asked to leave their garbage bin out all day on their individual collection day.

To learn more about the services and recycling, council is conducting free Earthworks courses on June 15 from 1pm to 4pm, June 23 from 6pm to 9pm, July 14 from 1pm to 4pm and July 27 from 1pm to 4pm. Call the council on 4221 6111 to book.

Residents who attend will receive a free compost bin.

The council website will shortly be updated with information about garbage services.

"RE " {May 8 Lake Times} “We have received excellent feedback regarding the upcoming introduction of the new garden vegetation bin,” Shellharbour City Mayor, David Hamilton said. Well how about sharing this positive feed back ! Or is that for Councillors eyes only ? And it still has'nt solved the Issue of a Weekly Household Rubbish Pick up , still no choices offered to the Community ?? I guess once the Illegal dumping of Refuse Increases , council can put the blame back onto the average House Holders , as not every home owns a Car and Trailer , to make regular visits to the Tip ! Well here's an Idea , since theirs no choice for the now obsolete weekly pick up , maybe council can come to a compromise , and waiver the tip fees for those Residents with vehicles , on the off weeks of House hold Rubbish collection ?
