STUDENTS of Oak Flats Highs Gifted and Talented group saw their term 4 efforts come to life on Tuesday evening when they showcased their Special Interest Projects.

The Gifted and Talented group is made up of students from year 7 to year 10, about 16 students participate in the class.

Their latest exhibition is based on the theme Time.

Students were asked to use creative and innovative thinking to interpret the theme, some took a literal approach while others opted for a more abstract view.

The Gifted and Talented group was born out of Oak Flats High Schools Positive Learning Committee. Students were nominated by staff and chosen as a result of a stringent selection process.

The ideal behind the program is to give students who are positive, independent learners an opportunity to showcase their talents.

One of the programs facilitators Silvia LauriKuit said all areas of the curriculum are catered to in the Gifted and Talented class, from science and maths to arts and literature.

The students are self driven, they choose what direction they want to take, she said.

They have put together this exhibition at a time when the year 10 certificate is on and everyone has exams and final assessments. They have taken a lot on to accept the challenge of being in this class but everyone has definitely risen to that challenge. We are all very proud of all of our students.

The programs other facilitator is Alice Johnson.

Year 10 student Greg Niven is part of the class.

He describes himself as a lateral thinker.

I like to think outside the box, he said.

A talented musician Greg writes music and plays guitar. He said the Gifted and Talented program provides an environment to associate with like minded people.

It is good to have people who think like you. Everyone provides inspiration, he said.
