JUNIOR tennis in the Kiama and Shellharbour District, Autumn competition, concluded on Saturday with some terrific tennis being played at the Grand Finals at Kiama and Jamberoo Tennis Centres.
Congratulations to all 290 children of the six clubs in the district that have taken part in this competition over the past five months.?
The standard of tennis and the sportsmanship shown between players has been excellent.
Oak Flats had the best possible outcome at the grand finals with six of their seven teams, who qualified, winning their divisions.?
The one the club missed out on was due to two Oak Flats teams fighting it out in division seven boys.
In a tight contest the points were equal after the doubles and the eventual winner was decided on sets.
It was a case of David vs Goliath in the Boys Division 1B Grand Final, with Oak Flats No. 2 team was against Warilla Bowl s No. 2 team.?
What made this match different was that the younger Oak Flats side consisted of three girls Ellen Perez, Deanne Coleman and Sheridan Calverley and Warilla Bowl were all boys as players are grouped by ability in junior Tennis and not by age or sex.
?Oak Flats had completed the competition as Minor Premiers and with Sheridan out due to a training accident went on to win the grand final match with some brilliant play.?
To have an all girls team in the boys competition is not the norm and the boys in the other teams in this division are to be congratulated on their good sportsmanship and good humour in having girls in their domain.
Teams are currently being finalised for the next competition which commences after the school holidays.?
A pre-competition warm up session and briefing for all Oak Flats teams will be held on Saturday July 15th, at 8.30am.
