SHELLHARBOUR City Council hosted a dementia awareness conference earlier this week in a bid to raise awareness about the condition within the Aboriginal community.

The conference also included information on a host of services and programs throughout the Illawarra designed to make living with dementia easier.

“Dementia is a growing issue that has major implications for families affected by the disease,” the council’s HACC Services and Development manager Narelle Williams said.

“This conference will help people identify many of the early signs of dementia, as well as provide strategies and planning tools for carers.”

Funded as part of the National Respite for Carers Program, the conference was held at the Warilla Bowls and Recreation Club on Monday and Tuesday.

A range of different speakers addressed the issues involved with Aboriginal people and dementia.
