Support Red Nose Day

RED Nose Day is this Friday. All money raised helps SIDS and Kids NSW save babies lives and support those families who have been affected by miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal death, SIDS and any other sudden or unexpected death of an infant.?

Through key services including education, training, bereavement support and advocacy SIDS and Kids NSW helps many families in their time of need.

Funds raided through efforts such as Red Nose Day help SIDS and Kids NSW continue to provide these services as well as focus on education through their SIDS and Kids Safe Sleeping campaign.

In Australia last year 1000 babies and young children died during pregnancy, around the time of birth and up to six years of age. This figure does not include miscarriage although it is estimated one in every four pregnancies ends this way.

SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) describes the sudden death of an infant which remains unexplained after all known and possible causes have been carefully ruled out through autopsy, death scene investigation and review of medical history.?

To reduce the risk of SIDS it is recommended you place your baby on his or her back to sleep starting from birth. The baby should be put to sleep with his or her face uncovered. Avoid smoking during pregnancy and after the birth of your baby, keep the baby in a smoke free environment at all times. Use a safe cot, safe cot mattress, safe bedding and make sure the baby sleeps in a safe sleeping place day and night.

Some of the dangers to look out for when putting a baby to sleep include heaters and electrical appliances, prams, strollers and bouncers where the restraints are not done up, dangling cords or string and leaving a baby to sleep unsupervised in an adult bed.
