Support for PCYC wrestlers

HOT on the heels of their medal tally success at the Australian School-Age Wrestling Championships in Adelaide, Lake Illawarra PCYC wrestlers Andrew Vassilakoglou, Elleni Poriotis, Nick Poriotis, Vassilli Poriotis and Blake Barden were the recipients of another form of gold, thanks to the generosity of the Shellharbour City Sports Assistance Fund.

Shellharbour City Cr Don Briggs, also Chairperson of the Fund was on hand at the Lake illwarra PCYC last week to present the five talented wrestlers with a total of $1800 to assist them in continuing to attend out of area competitions and further their sporting careers.

According to Mr Briggs, the Shellharbour City Sports Assistance Fund is the only organisation in the State which provides funding to athletes.

The fund was established to help young sporting talent and their families to meet the cost of participating in and attending out of area sporting competitons, Mr Briggs said.

We are always pleased to recognise our young local sporting talent with this kind of support.

I congratulate Andrew, Elleni, Nick, Vassilli and Blake in their achievements so far and encourage them to continue to pursue excellence in their sporting endeavours.

Mr Briggs also took the opportunty to remind people that nominations are now open for the 2006 sports Star of the Year Awards.
