Even with their warm, furry coats, the cats of Shellharbour might be a little apprehensive about the onset of the colder months, particularly if they are homeless.

And according to the Illawarra branch of the Animal Welfare League, a saviour of stray animals, there are many stray cats in the Illawarra.

Starting tomorrow, Friday, May 2, the Animal Welfare League is promoting May Spay which focuses on female cats and will offer eligible cat owners access to half-price spaying for their pet.

The special price of $75 offered by participating veterinarians will be reserved for cat owners receiving Centrelink benefits or in possession of a government healthcare card.

“We spend a lot of time tracking down unwanted cats and we hope that May Spay can reduce the number of stray cats,” Animal Welfare League branch secretary Marion Hough said.

“May Spay is for people who can’t afford to pay $150 but want to do the right thing,” she said.

For details about veterinary clinics supporting May Spay or to make a donation to the Animal Welfare League call 4261 1763 or 4261 1686.
