SHELLHARBOUR City Rowing Club runs two Learn to Row programs each year. The goal of the programs is to introduce and allow a wide range of the community to participate in the sport of rowing.
Each program consists of 6 x 2 hour sessions. The first session is mainly land based and includes coaching on rowing simulators plus an introduction to boat handling and rowing terminology as well as a 100 meter swim test. The next 5 sessions are all on water and are designed to give all participants a basic understanding of crew rowing. Sessions are on Saturday and Sunday, starting from 8.00am.
At the conclusion of the program, rowers successfully completing the course will be invited to join the club to participate in competitive interclub regattas or social rowing on Lake Illawarra.
Rowing is a demanding sport both physically and mentally so organisers say it is necessary to place entry restrictions on participants. All applicants must be healthy and reasonably fit as well as capable swimmers. The club places the following minimums on Juniors applying for the program.
Minimum entry age is 14 years, with minimum weight for girls at 45kg and 50kg for boys.
There will be an Information and Registration session on Sunday, February 18 from 8:30am to 9:30am at the boat shed at Deakin Reserve, The Boulevarde, Oak Flats.
The cost of the Learn to Row Courses is $90 and is limited to 16 participants, ensuring that the pupil/instructor ratio is never greater than 4:1.
