UNBEATEN competition leaders Wests Cardinals and Berkeley Eagles had shutout wins in round five of the Illawarra Baseball League premiership on Saturday.
Wests defeated Dapto Chiefs 6-0 at Cringila Park, while Berkeley defeated Kiama Braves 11-0.
Saturday's win was the third of the season for Cards' starter Jamie Simon.
He pitched all eight innings with six strikeouts in the four-hit shutout.
The hitting favoured Cardinals 7-4 and one significant hit, a two out single by Cameron Thompson in the third inning, batted in three runs for the only multiple-run inning of the game.
Unfortunately for Chiefs, one of the two errors made in the game came in that inning and translated into three unearned runs.
The first run came from an RBI hit by Paul Trembearth in the first, before the Cards added runs in the fifth and eighth innings.
Cardinal's first baseman Lee Vlasoff was the only player on either team to register multiple hits at 2 from 4.
Dapto Chiefs used three pitchers, starter Aaron Mills allowed one earned run on five hits in three innings and reliever Simon Cooper pitched four innings for one earned run on one hit with five strikeouts.
Closer Jonathan Hall also allowed one earned run on one hit in the final inning.
At Gainsborough, Berkeley produced their best performance of the season, outhitting the Braves 15-3.
An early 1-nil lead blew out with four runs in the third and a further three in the fourth.
Eagles' first baseman Keith Ward and catcher Kyle Perkins headed the batting statistics registering three hits apiece.
Ben Shepherd and Tim Atherton chipped in with two hits each, while Kiama's Brendan Capri registered two of the Braves hits.
Berkeley used three pitchers, starter Josh Doyle conceding two hits and reliever Tim Atherton being hitless in one inning. Closer Glen Vickers gave up one hit in three innings.
Round five sees a mouth-watering clash between Berkeley and Wests at Eagles Field, Fred Finch Park, Berkeley. Bulli Pirates will face Dapto Chiefs at Thomas Dalton Park, Fairy Meadow.
