Kevin Gillis believes the history of the Shellharbour Local Government Area is a “well-kept secret” and encouraged everyone to learn about it during the city’s 150th anniversary celebrations.
“We have a great history with many great stories but the history hasn’t been told to its full extent and we’re always finding new things,” the Tongarra Museum volunteer said.
“We’ve done a lot of research here about historical things that are well-known, but not in the public arena.”
Mr Gillis said one of the more fascinating aspects of the area’s history was that it was one of the few government areas whose boundaries had not been altered.
“There have been a lot of fascinating people in the area, and we hope that the 150th will raise some awareness,” he said.
As part of celebrations, the museum will host a major exhibition at the Centenary Hall at Albion Park from June 8-13; however museum curator Tamara Hynd said people could drop in any time.
“People are often surprised at the resources we have here at the museum,” she said.
The museum is in Russell Street, Albion Park and is open on Wednesdays (10am-4pm) and Saturdays (9am-12pm).
