MORE THAN 10,000 people filled the parkland in Shellharbour City Centre last Friday night for Shellharbour’s annual Carols by Candlelight celebration.

The event kicked off at 5:30pm, with a children’s Christmas Magic Show featuring Ronald McDonald, followed by family carols.

After two hours of carols, the patience of the children in the audience was rewarded with a visit from Santa Claus and a fireworks display.

Mayor David Hamilton said the event was a huge success.

“There were smiling faces everywhere as I walked through the crowd, with young and old singing along to their favourite Christmas songs,” he said.

“Carols by Candlelight is the region’s largest Christmas event and it’s wonderful to see so many people out enjoying themselves in such a positive atmosphere.

“Seeing the look on the faces of the young children as Santa appeared on stage in a puff of smoke was a real highlight.”

Mayor Hamilton also thanked the Council staff involved in staging the event, and congratulated all the performers.
