When Oak Flats High School student Amber Mobberley decided to shave her head to support the Leukaemia Foundation World’s Greatest Shave, the whole school got behind her.

The year 11 student shaved her head at a school assembly earlier this month, with the school designating the day a ‘crazy hair day’ to raise money for Amber’s cause.

Many of the school’s students chose to donate a gold coin to spray their hair with a variety of bright colours on the day.

Amber said she decided to shave her head after her family was affected by cancer.

“I decided to do it because my pop passed away a few years ago from cancer, and a couple of weeks ago someone else I was close to passed away from cancer,” she said.

“I didn’t expect so many people to be so supportive. Some people I’ve never talked to have donated money.”

Amber said she had raised $1000 so far, not including the proceeds of the crazy hair day event at her school, which are still on the way.

While Amber admitted she now gets some funny looks when out and about, she said there were upsides to having a shaved head.

“It feels really nice in the wind,” she said.

So far, the 2008 Leukaemia Foundation World’s Greatest Shave campaign has raised over $2 million nationally with $770,000 from NSW.

Money raised from the World’s Greatest Shave campaign goes to ‘home-away-from-home’ facilities, transportation, practical assistance for patients and research.
