Rise & Shine, a Environmental Improvement Program run annually by Wollongong City Council marked its 21st anniversary this year with some groups cleaning up Puckeys Catchment on Sunday October 15 2006, while other groups cleaned up the Lake Illawarra Catchment on Sunday November 5, 2006.
The Save Lake Illawarra Action Group have been involved in this program for several years and this year the group focussed on cleaning up the Kully Bay area from the Yacht Club to Tuggerah Bay.
According to organisers, 12 intrepid volunteers turned up on a cold , wet and very windy morning for the clean up, collecting 13 bags of rubbish, a shopping trolley from Minnegang Creek and bits and pieces of boat trailer parts.
Wollongong City Council held the Annual Awards Presentation on Thursday December 14 at Wollongong Town Hall where the Lord Mayor, Cr Alex Darling presented awards to the participating groups.
The Award categories were Community Spring Clean-up Campaign Award, Bluescope Steel Environment School Award, World Environmental Day Award, Encouragement Awards, Gold Awards for Outstanding Effort and the Basil Ryan Award.
The Save Lake Illawarra Action Group were selected to receive a Rise & Shine Special Environmental Encouragement Award in recognition of their contribution to improving the Citys environment.
