John O’Dwyer OAM wished 190 Probus members a happy day filled with an abundance of friendship at the 20th anniversary celebrations of the annual Combined Probus Luncheon held on Monday at the Warilla Bowls Club.
In 1988 five Probus clubs - Gerringong, Shellharbour, Kiama Mens, Kiama Ladies and Kiama Downs came together for the inaugural luncheon held at Unanderra. Today there are 14 Probus Clubs from Albion Park to Gerroa with 190 members present at this week’s luncheon.
Three founding members of the luncheon, Margaret and John Carmichael, and Robert Dickenson were given the honour of cutting the anniversary cake.
Shellharbour and Kiama Downs Mens Probus clubs were equal winners of the coveted Combined Bowls and Golf Keith Parker Trophy which was accepted by John O’Neil and Peter Jones.
Blackbutt Flinders Combined Probus Club hosted the celebrations. Charlotte and Peter De Lucia joined the Blackbutt Flinders group two months ago to make new friends and join in social activities.
“We are lucky to find such a friendly group in our area,” Charlotte De Lucia said.
Alan Quinn, retired principal of Lake South Primary School, has been a member of Albion Park Oak Flats Combined Probus Club for the past 10 years. “Probus is great for companionship, entertainment and friendship, and like retirement it is highly recommended,” Alan Quinn said.
