WORK officially began last Wednesday on a project that Albion Park Chamber of Commerce president Jim McCallum described as 15 years in the making.
Students from Albion Park Public School joined Member for Throsby Jennie George and Shellharbour City Council staff in turning the first sods of dirt on the Destination Albion Park project at a ceremony in Melaleuca Park.
The ceremony signified the official start of the $3.3 m project, which is being funded through the Federal Government’s Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program and Shellharbour City Council.
Council’s director of operations and services Arthur Webster said the council was pleased to be starting construction on a project that would revitalise the Albion Park town centre.
“The upgrading of the Albion Park town centre will capture a tourist market that currently uses the area purely as a thoroughfare as well as providing a fitting gateway to rest of the Illawarra,” he said.
“This is the first step in the creation of a refurbished and attractive town centre that will provide residents with a highly desirable focal point for the community.”
Mr McCallum said the project marked the beginning of a change for the Albion Park CBD.
“It’s been a long time planning,” he said. “We now have enough funds to have an impact on the town centre.’’
