AUSTRALIAN Institute of Sport kayaker, and Barrack Point resident David Smith is continuing his rapid rise into the ranks of senior level international kayaking.

Competing in the SeniorWorld Championships in Szeged Hungary on August 17 as part of the Australian K4 1000m crew David and the team recorded a very creditable 4th in the 1000m B final.

Australian mens coach,Ben Hutchings said he was pleased with the crews effort in the short time they have been together.

We have three young blokes in the boat as well as an experienced team boat paddler and they have all put in 100% throughout the competition, he said.

They are learning every time they line up and race. There is a lot of work to do both individually and as a group and I am optimistic about our team boat chances over the next couple of years, he said.

David Smith recent results come as no surprise to his local coach Terry Prosser, who is tipping more big things to come from the 19 year old.

David has never been beaten over 1000m as a junior and has a hell of a future ahead of him, said Mr Prosser.

Prosser, also of Barrack Point, coaches a group of up to 40 kayakers eachweekat Minnamurra River.

Leading in to the currentWorld Championships we have worked on David having an explosive first 500m, which is essential at that level, said Mr. Prosser.

Prosser, himself a former distance paddler took up coaching to help improve his own technique.

To make it in kayaking you need a big heart and dedication, something David possesses, he is widely regarded as the most committed dedicated trainer among the group.
