Open hands filling bellies

AS a 19-year-old fashion student, there’s plenty of other things Shellharbour’s Naomi Thomson could be doing on a Friday evening.
But starting two weeks ago each week on Friday between 5.30pm and 6.30pm, you will find she and fellow Shellharbour City Baptist Church member, Mt Warrigal’s Judy Dyble, serving free meals to those in need.
Ms Thomson said the idea for the church’s Open Hands ‘soup kitchen’ was born from the struggle she saw around her.
“You just have to look around Warilla to know it is an area of need,’’ Ms Thomson said. “I work at Warilla Grove and you see so many people looking through the garbage. So many people are doing it tough.
“I thought about how well-off my family was. I’m not doing it to look good, it’s just that I have hands and I can help.’’
Ms Thomson said while the church was funding the free two-course meal of soup or other hot mains and a dessert, donations of help, food and money would be gratefully accepted.
The church is located on the corner of William and Antrim Sts, Shellharbour and all are welcome.
Ms Thomson said while there were other churches and community organisations in the area offering free meals, few operated in the evening.
“We just want to let people know there’s a helping hand here which is well-needed in the area.’’
If you wish to volunteer with Open Hand or wish to donate money or supplies, please contact Naomi Thomson on 0413 761 621 or the church on 4296 8091.
