Thirroul development control a winner

Another successful Thirroul Seaside and Arts Festival was staged by the Austinmer/Thirroul Lions Club over the weekend.

Thousands flocked to the bustling seaside village to celebrate the regions rich artistic cultural identity. But thats not the only reason people like to visit Thirroul.

The village atmosphere, hemmed by the great green wall of the escarpment and the expanse of the Tasman Sea, Thirroul is a special place.

The announcement on Monday that Wollongong City Council will attempt to restrict overdevelopment of the suburb through a development control plan (DCP) is a step in the right direction.

Residents have been pushing for height restrictions in the suburbs for years and Mondays announcement that setbacks and height restrictions will be imposed has been cautiously welcomed.

The DCP includes new controls designed to allow development to a scale required by the State Government. This has been achieved by retaining a two-storey height limit for the southern sector of the town centre but allowing up to three storeys in part of the northern portion, with third storey set backs to be six metres from frontages.

The big test now is convincing the State Government.
