SOUTH Coast Rugby League's defending premiers, the Albion Park-Oak Flats Eagles, are calling on the public to help them smash breast cancer this Saturday.

The Eagles, fresh off a premiership-winning campaign in 2006, open their 2007 season with a grand final replay against archrivals Shellharbour City at Centenary Field on Saturday.

To kick-start their season and raise money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF), the Eagles organised a gala event at Shellharbour Workers' Club for Saturday night to coincide with their blockbuster season opener.

The Eagles will wear specially commissioned pink jerseys in the clash.

Kombat sports have supplied 21 Individually designed/sponsored Pink jumpers to be worn on the day.

With 15 further unique jerseys that have been signed by 15 Australian-based NRL teams, these will be auctioned off at the gala evening event with proceeds going to the NBCF.

The driving force behind the Eagles' push has been first grade coach Shane Sainsbury, whose mother, Noelene Sainsbury, is battling the disease.

"We have a lot of people from the club whose lives have been touch my breast cancer," he said.

"Everyone has a mother or a sister and breast cancer can affect anyone.

"When you see someone suffering from something like that it makes you want to do something."

There are limited numbers of seats left for the gala function at Shellharbour Workers', which promises to be the best Shellharbour has seen.

Tickets are $100, including three-course meal and drinks, and can be booked by calling Margo on 0419 125 407, Leanne on 0438 564 217, Amanda on 0411 849 740 or Margaret on 0412 009 691.

As for Saturday's action at Centenary Field, it is hoped more than 5000 people turn up to support the cause.

Only turn up in pink clothing or expect to cop a fine from the pink police.

There will be a mystery guest MC, entertainment, rides and games for the kids and a great day out for all.

Commemorative shirts are available at the gate for only $15.

Our local ambassador, Dr Margaret Gardiner, will be on site selling NBCF merchandise.

The Eagles have already raised a whopping $45,000 for the NBCF.

Gates open at 10.45am, with under 18s kick off at 11.45am, reserve grade at 1.15pm and the main game at 2.45pm. Entry to the ground is $6.
