COMPETITION leaders Warilla Sports are in a strong position heading into day two of their top-of-the-table clash with Lake Illawarra at Oakleigh Park on Saturday.
The Kookas will resume at 3/220 with Mick Perry (69) and Adam Foskitt (55) in the midst of a 134-run, fourth-wicket stand.
Earlier, Craig Bramble (39 retired hurt) and Nash Hutchinson (30) combined for a 70-run opening stand.
Tony Panecasio (2/43) was the pick of the Lake bowlers, while Shane Cody (1/29) also snared a wicket.
Meanwhile, The Rail faces an uphill task to get back into their clash with Oak Flats at Geoff Shaw Oval.
The Razorbacks will resume at 4/38, 230 runs adrift of their first innings target of 268.
Former Rat Simon Bartlett and Jason Kennedy are not out after day one, both on three.
Darren O’Connell caused havoc for the Rail’s top order, bagging 3/14 before stumps.
Earlier, Kerry Penfold (100) and Rob McMahon (116) put together an unbeaten, third-wicket stand of 204 for the third wicket as the Rats racked up 2/268 (dec).
Kiama made a positive start 2008 by securing first innings points on day one of their tussle with Shellharbour at Kiama Sporting Complex.
The visitors will resume at 0/0 in their second innings after conceding a 55-run first-innings deficit.
Batting first Shellharbour were skittled for 44, highlighted by 4/9 by Kiama’s Mick Norris and 3/15 from Dale Scifleet.
Kiama reached 8/99 in reply before declaring and setting up a possible outright result on Saturday.
Scifleet continued a handy match with 45 while Colin Couchman bagged 5/26 for Shellharbour.
At Kevin Walsh Oval, Jamberoo need 188 runs with eight wickets in hand to score a win over one day champions Albion Park.
