It’s time to help clean up the Illawarra

THOUSANDS of Illawarra volunteers are expected to don gloves and pick up a garbage bag for Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday, March 7.
Clean Up Australia Day is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. It has become Australia’s largest community-based environ-mental event, almost 630,000 volunteers participating last year.
Stockland Shellharbour will be leading the area’s effort, helping to clean up Reddall Parade.
Stockland Shellharbour centre manager, Glenn Atkins said that it was not too late to get involved.
“Volunteers are urged to come and help out at a Stockland Clean Up site,” he said.
“Just turn up on the day with gloves, a hat, sturdy shoes and register as a volunteer.”
As an added incentive, everyone who helps on the day has the chance to enter a Clean Up Treasure Hunt at Reddall Reserve from 11.30am.
All entries drawn will be given one minute to dig on the beach for more than $1000 in prizes.
Sites already registered include Bass Point Myimbarr Wetlands, Shellharbour Pool, Central Park. Lake Illawarra PCYC and Windang Surf Life Saving Club.
Volunteers can form a group and register their own site online or sign up individually to volunteer at a site already registered. Register at www.cleanup.org.au or phone 1800 282 329.
Futureworld Eco Technology Centre, Warrawong will also be involved in the clean up by becoming a registration point on the day.
