THOUSANDS of plane enthusiasts and people from all walks of life came together last Saturday when the Illawarra Regional Airport hosted the first Wings Over the Illawarra Open Day. The RAAF Roulettes made a special guest appearance at the event organised by Shellharbour City Council and the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS). The Open Day featured static displays of historical aircraft and classic vehicles, that saw vintage aircraft from the Temora Aviation Museum visit Albion Park. Wings Over the Illawarra Open Day aimed to promote airport facilities and gave Illawarra residents the chance to get up close to the HARS fleet that includes the world famous Connie, a 1955 Super Constellation Lockheed, a Neptune bomber and the Catalina. HARS aircraft were displayed on the tarmac with another ten available for close inspection within the No 1 hangar; including a Sabre jet dismantled at Bankstown Airport, transported by road to Albion Park and reassembled by volunteers earlier this month.
