Shellharbour senior citizens were welcomed to Warilla High School last week for Grandparents Day, in Seniors Week.
Members of the school’s St Vincent De Paul Youth Team organised the event, which included speeches, lunch and an opportunity for teachers and grandparents to meet.
“It’s a special day because the seniors are recognised for everything they do for their grandkids,” student organiser Emily Olive said.
Emily said the residents of Mt Warrigal Aged Care Home had also been invited to the event, as they were known to the students through a school visitation program.
“A lot don’t have families who come and see them so it’s nice for them to feel like they have some recognition,” Emily said.
Emily’s grandparents, Tom and Sandra Stobbie, travelled from Lake Tabourie, south of Ulladulla, for the event.
“This is the first opportunity I’ve had to come to the school,” Ms Stobbie said.
“I’m really proud of Emily and all the kids at the school who have organised this.
“Many senior citizens do not have a lot of recognition, and they’re the ones who have built up this country.
“I think it’s very respectable.”
The event was held in the school’s auditorium and funded by the NSW Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care.
