ALBION Park Women’s Hockey Club’s most decorated player, Di Gorman was made an inaugural inductee to the Hockey NSW Hall of Fame on Saturday. Gorman, a veteran on 84 test matches and 64 games for NSW was one of six inductees to the hall of fame. In an Australian career spanning from 1969 to 1981, Gorman captained the Hockeyroos in four matches. However, Di was robbed of an Olympic berth by the Australian boycott of the 1980 Moscow games. Di was the only Australian selected in a World XI for the International Association Jubilee in the same year.
Between 1968 and 1993 Di represented NSW 64 times, including seven matches as captain.
Despite such an impressive resume Di said she was shocked to be one of six inaugural inductees into the Hockey NSW Hall of Fame. “I was quite shocked that I made it because there are some great ones who have played for NSW,” she said. “I’m really proud that they thought of me. “When I get things like this they’re a bonus, not why I do the things I do. “I appreciate it but I do the things I do because I love hockey.”
Di said she saw no end to her considerable involvement with Albion Park Women’s Hockey Club. “Never. I started here and I’ve never left,” she said. Di, who coached NSW under 21s from 1982-1989, was also thrilled to have the junior female player of the year award named after her. Di has served as a selector, coach and manager and started her career with Albion Park at eight years old.
