The RSPCA is appealing for the community not to buy animals as surprise gifts this Christmas, with many ending up as ‘unwanted toys’ after the festive season had passed.
Illawarra RSPCA shelter manager Judith Wright said it was best to make sure the person receiving the pet knows that they are getting it and that they help choose their pet.
Ms Wright also had advice for pet owners travelling over the Christmas season.
“If you’re going away and not boarding your pets, make sure a reliable person cares for them. Provide information about what to do if something goes wrong, and tag and microchip your pet so they can be identified if they escape.”
Pet owners are also warned against giving their pets silly-season indulgences like chocolate or fatty ham.
Ms Wright also urged pet owners to keep Christmas lights out of reach of animals to prevent electrocution.
The RSPCA receives several thousand extra cats and dogs during the Christmas season, making it a stressful time for animals and staff.
The organisation is appealing for public support to their local shelter by donating an item from the RSPCA’s annual wish list such as plastic dog and cat beds, litter trays, cat litter, toys, dog collars and bedding.
The Illawarra RSPCA shelter is located at 54 Industrial Rd, Unanderra. To contact the shelter, call 4271 3410.
