ILLAWARRA tourism groups are encouraged to apply for funding through the federal government funding for innovative and regional tourism projects.

Illawarra based Liberal Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells said under the Australian Tourism Development Program $4 million of funding is now available for local projects which can attract more tourists to our region and create local jobs.

"I encourage local tourism organisations and operators to apply for funding from the Howard Government," she said.

"The Howard Government has $4 million of funding available to support local tourism projects. This is practical, on the ground support. By boosting tourism to our local region, we can create jobs and boost the local economy."

The Australian Tourism Development Program offers funding for innovative and regional tourism projects from $50,000 to $500,000.

Ms Fierravanti-Wells said the first three rounds have seen 133 projects funded a total of almost $22 million.

"Tourism is big business for Australia and the Illawarra Region. Tourism creates more than half a million jobs, including 200 000 jobs in regional Australia. Tourism is a $75 billion industry which earns Australia $19 billion in exports," she said.

Further information on the Australian Tourism Development Program is at www.ausindustry.gov.au or by calling the hotline on 13 28 46.

Applications for Round 4 close on Friday, 27 April 2007.
