Celebrating Easter in Shellharbour

In keeping with the tradition of Easter, far too much chocolate will be eaten, churches around our city will be visited and families will come together.

Shellharbour schools including Oak Flats Public School (pictured) have been preparing all week with costume events and card making.

The students from Oak Flats Public School brought in Easter decorations, made Easter hats and wore them at a special school parade yesterday.

Darrel Lea, the home of chocolate at Stockland Shellharbour braced themselves for this week’s last minute egg rush.

Dianne from Darrel Lea said being an early Easter this year, people were caught short.

“There’s always a rush to buy the traditional chocolate eggs,” she said.

“Our nougat eggs are also very popular.

“Aside from the traditional purchases, we also sell a lot of chocolate Bilbies and from each sale, we make a donation to the Save the Bilby fund.”

Easter card sales and postal quantities have been consistent with last year according to Sharon from the Australia Post branch at Oak Flats.

“Most of the Easter cards sent are mailed overseas to friends and relatives that can’t be visited over the Easter weekend,” Sharon said.

“There’s also a few Easter eggs being mailed within Australia this year,” she said.

Alf at Bakers Delight Albion Park said the hot cross buns were walking out the door the moment they come out of the oven.

“None of our hot cross buns contain peel, as people don’t want that,” Alf said.

“But both the traditional hot cross buns with spices and currents and the choc chip variety have been a big hit this Easter,” he said.

Local churches are also expecting to welcome regular parishioners and an influx of visitors to Easter weekend services.
