Borderland is a mixture between First Person Shooter and Role Playing game with cell-shaded graphics that give the game a hand drawn look.
You play on a post apocalyptic world called Pandora and the game kind of reminds me of Mad Max but on an alien world, with four different character types that you can progress and build up on an individual level, all of them having their own unique abilities and strengths.
The single player and multiplayer elements are uniquely combined so that whatever missions you play and complete in online multiplayer with other online gamers are completed in your single player game also.
So as you level up in online games you are also leveled up in your single player game, whatever weapons you pick up or are given by other players online are also reflected in your single player game as well, whatever money is found by your comrades online is shared and stays with you in single player.
If you join up with a friend who is on a more advanced level than you, you can still join in and earn a massive amount of XP and when you reach that point in your own game there is no need to redo that entire mission again, it is already completed from when you did it with your friend previously.
This way the game doesn’t become repetitive playing the same missions over and over again. You have a large inventory where you keep all of your weapons and you can buy and sell weapons, ammo and health packs from the vending machines scattered around the levels, getting extra weapon support in the form of things like a stationary portable turret that can be placed to help out and distract enemies while you flank around and kick their butt with your other weapons, this Turret can also be upgraded so when you stand in its vicinity it regenerates your health there are also different vehicles, some you can be either gunner or driver.
With so many missions to complete they almost seem endless along with the amount of weapons and the playing field is massive which is where the on screen compass comes in handy pointing the way to your next objective.
Apart from the bosses and different human enemies like wrestling mask wearing midgets, and other masked bad guys wanting to take you out wherever you go there are also Alien creatures including ones called Scrags that just seem to be everywhere jumping at you trying to stick their tongues down your throat, they could have at least offered to buy me a drink first, so I had to shoot them just for being too overeager.
The story elements take a sidestep to absolute fun and although single player is extremely good the real longevity is to be had in multiplayer putting on the headset and having a good laugh with the other players from all corners of the planet taking out the enemy or each other if you just don’t like the look of them or maybe they just picked up a weapon you really wanted, you just walk on up to them smack them in the head and go into a duel mode.
If you want you can play with a friend in the same room Split screen multiplayer as well.
