WITH summer rapidly approaching and the warmer weather already upon us the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Shellharbour (AVCGS) are urging all boat owners to have their boats and motors serviced, in preparation for the upcoming season.

A spokeperson for the AVCGS said while boaties should be congratulated for keeping their equipment in good condition, it was important to double check everything before going to sea, particularly if your boat has been lying idle over the winter months.

We actually have very few assists given the number of boats that go to sea over the year, he said.

But it is still important to check all your safety gear, expiry dates on flares and that batteries are fully charged and in good condition.

The AVCGS thanked the community for their generosity during a recent fund raising drive at Warilla Grove Shopping Centre. We raised a lot more than we expected, thanks to the terrific generosity of the public, said the AVCGSs Peter Keft.

We would also like to thank Albion Park Bowls and Recreation Club, Warilla Sports Club and Shellharbour Workers Club for their support through CDSE funding and the Government for our recent Fisheries Grant.

Its this type of support that helps ensure we can continue our volunteer services at such a local level.

The AVCGS also advised that they are planning a flare demonstration in the near future & if people have flares out of date that they wish to dispose of, they can drop these into the Coast Guard base at Shellharbour any weekend.

If anyone is interested in becoming a volunteer with the Coast Guard , you can call into the Shellharbour base at the boat harbour on weekends & public holidays or phone Bruce Mitchell on 0414779317 for more information. Information. Members of the public are always welcome to call in to our base at Shellharbour anytime to discuss their concerns or for general weather and boating updates. And if you are planning on heading out to sea, remember to log on with the Coast Guard Port Kembla 27MHz channel 88 or VHF channel 16 before going to sea.
