TWO students who attended Smith's Hill High School have been awarded the Lord Florey Australian Students Prize, a Federal Government initiative designed to give national recognition to academic excellence and achievement in secondary education.

Angela Evans of Oak Flats and Brett Heino of Horsley have achieved the prestigeuos award through hard work and the help of our public education system. The prize comprises a certificate and payment of $2,000 with five hundred available nationwide each year. Allocation of prizes between the states and territories is based on the relative share of the Year 12 population. Prizes are also awarded to students who won medals as part of Australia's team in the International Mathematics, Informatics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology Olympiads. State and territory Ministers are to nominate students for the prize with Minister for Education, Science and Training, Julie Bishop to oversee the selection process.

Selection of students is determined by each state or territory Minister on the basis of information provided by their own state assessment boards.

The names of the prize winners are announced in the national press once all awards are finalised.
