Combining fashion along with a newfound sense of environmental awareness, local primary school student Ashlee Burgess has beaten over 220 other entries in designing a new eco-friendly shopping bag.
The competition aimed at teaching local students the importance of maintaining an environmentally friendly lifestyle, was open to all Illawarra students. Ashlee’s school, St John’s Catholic School, received a $1,000 cash donation courtesy of her win.
For a gold coin donation, the bag is now available at the Dapto Mall as a sustainable alternative to plastic bags.
“This competition was a great way to get the kids involved in something fun whilst learning new ways to be environmentally-friendly,” said Dapto Mall centre manager Mark Hayes.
“We hope to raise awareness about the importance of the community doing their bit for the environment, and the money raised from the sale of the bags helps brighten the lives of seriously ill children from the Starlight Children’s Foundation Australia which is even better.”
