Do you think the Illawarra business community should have been more supportive of the Albion Park QantasLink service, which has just shut down?

Ebony Young

ONE young girl has had enough of the stench attacking her local park by the lake at Kanahooka.

Eleven year old Ebony Young, who lives three streets from the lake, said she was horrified when a family trip to lake saw her take in a view of a moss covered shopping trolley in the water, dead birds and weeds clogging up the shore.

She decided to create a petition and only one week after placing the petition in the Kanahooka Takeaway store opposite the lake she has attracted a large number of signatures. Clearly she is not the only one who wants something done about the state of the lake at Kanahooka.

She is asking Wollongong Council and the Lake Illawarra Authority to clear the lake of rubbish and put clean sand on the shore area, which is presently laden with weeds.

It would be better if their was nice sand so people could sit down with the family and talk and the kids could play on the sand, she said.

Right now you cant do that because there is so much moss, weeds and dead birds.

She said sometimes the smell that comes from the lake is enough to make her feel unwell.

We have to drive with the windows up when we go past the lake even if it a hot day because of the smell, she said.

She said she is hoping hundreds of people will sign her petition and something positive will come of it.

Im very passionate about this and I just need a lot of names to take my petition to the council, she said.

Ebony and her mother Joanne Young are quick to defend the park area and walking track saying the council workers do a great job, they are simply concerned about the state of the lake itself and the effect its present state has on the families who would like to utilise the lake more often.
