ALP launches nuclear reactor protest

A PETITION opposing possible plans for a nuclear reactor at Port Kembla has been launched by Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Water Anthony Albanese and Member for Throsby Jennie George.

The Government plans to build 25 nuclear reactors across the country, with the Australia Institute naming Port Kembla as a possible site for one of the plants.

Jennie George initiated the petition and said she was acting in the interest of residents.

"I think it's important that the Government recognises that residents don't want a reactor here or anywhere in the Illawarra.

"I'd much rather have lots of wave powered generators and invest in solar and geothermal energy," she said.

Port Kembla was identified as a potential site due to its proximity to electricity and transport infrastructure, and seawater for cooling.

Ms George denied the petition was an election stunt. "We're against nuclear power as a solution to global warming," she said.

"If there are Liberals saying "?not in my electorate', (Prime Minister John Howard) can't force it on the people here in Port Kembla."

Several concerned residents attended the petition launch, held at the Maritime Union of Australia building in Port Kembla.

Local resident and member of the Labor Party Norma Wilson said she was a long time opponent of nuclear energy. "I don't want it in my backyard. I don't want it in anybody's backyard," she said.

"I don't think it's the way to go, mainly due to the problems with getting rid of the waste."

Port Kembla resident Robert Turner said he had come to the petition launch to learn more about the issue, and said he didn't think Port Kembla was an appropriate site for a reactor.

"I think we've got enough industrial activity around Port Kembla. We've been trying to control the associated pollution for many years."
