Adam Zampa has celebrated the beginning of a new cricket season with selection in the NSW Under 19s team.

The Warilla-based player was selected in the Under 19s team, despite being just 16 years of age and therefore still being eligible for the Under 17s side.

Zampa, who plays for the Warilla Sports club, has been enjoying great form for his side thus far this season. The NSW Under 19 Selection Committee chose Zampa as a member of the 14-man squad, which will compete in the National Under 19 Championship. The championships will be played in Newcastle from December 8-19.

Zampa and the remainder of the team will also travel to Lismore early next week for a handful of trial matches against Queensland and shortly afterwards will play trial games against the ACT in Sydney. “I was just relieved and excited,” Zampa said. “I put in a good performance in the final trial and it was enough for me to be selected.”

Zampa is a bowling all-rounder who has been an extremely consistent performer for Warilla Sports this season. He described his batting style as “just aggressive” and also said that as a leg-spinner, his main inspiration as a bowler was former world record holder Shane Warne.

Zampa said it was “hard work and consistency” that enabled him to be chosen for this prestigious honour.

He has been playing cricket for ten years and said he was drawn to the sport because he had grown up with his father Darren also playing for Warilla and that his interest had grown from there.

As for his future ambitions, Zampa said he was trying not to get ahead of himself.

“I just want to keep working hard and hopefully make the Australian Under 19s team next,” he said. “I’m just going to take it one step at a time at this stage.”
