Academy top cheerleading class

THE ACADEMY of Cheerleading (AC) has been named the best club in NSW at the recent NSW Gymnastics Association awards – after just two years of existence.

Four of the 14 NSW cheerleading clubs were nominated based on highest point scores at the major competitions.

“Although we weren’t expecting anything considering this is only our 2nd year of operation, we won the award,” AC’s Cristine Gomes said.

In 2007 AC’s teams, the Super Divaz and Super Starz achieved outstanding results at the major competitions.

At the NSW Championships the Super Divaz won the pom and second in the cheer.

Meanwhile, the Super Starz came second in cheer and fifth in pom.

At the Australian Championships the Super Divaz placed second in both routines, resulting in a second overall placing by just one point.

The Super Starz were awarded second in their cheer routine and tenth in pom.

The Academy of Cheerleading would like to thank their sponsors and suppliers for 2007.

“Cheerleading is the perfect avenue for anyone wanting to improve fitness, strength, flexibility, social skills, self discipline, confidence and ability to perform in front of an audience,” Cristine said.

In addition to the Super Divaz and Super Starz AC has a fun class: Super Chix.

“We train at Albion Park Gymnastics Club and Lake Illawarra PCYC,” Crisitine said. Tuesday night sessions are held at the PCYC, Thursday night workouts at the gymnasium at Albion Park Sgowground.

AC also hold a tumbling class where cheerleaders, dancers, gymnasts and members of the general public can come to learn and improve their tumbling skills.

Enrolments for competitive cheerleading classes will be taken until April 10 and enrolments for all other classes are taken all year round.
