BRENDAN CRABB

DOG owners in Shellharbour who do not have their pets micro-chipped are invited to attend Shellharbour City Council’s second micro-chipping day of 2008, where they can have the service provided for a reduced fee.

The service is open to residents of Shellharbour City who have a dog aged over 12 weeks that has not yet been micro-chipped.

It is compulsory for all dogs in NSW to be micro-chipped.

Council ranger supervisor Craig Nowlan said that council typically holds micro-chipping days about every three months and that each one attracts an average of 30-40 owners and their dogs.

He said this was an ideal opportunity for dog owners to help look after their pets.

“The going rate for a veterinarian to perform the micro-chipping is around $40,” he said.

“Not only is the cost reduction favourable, any pet that isn’t micro-chipped has less chance of being potentially reunited with its owner.”

The dog micro-chipping day will be held on Saturday, May 17, at Skiway Park (off the Esplanade, Oak Flats), from 9am to noon.
