Section: Sport
IN May 2004, the Australian Government announced that 2007 will officially be known as the Year of the Lifesaver, the first time a community - based organisation has received such an honour.
2007 marks the 100th anniversary of Surf Life Saving, an organisation which has saved over 5000,000 lives on Australian beaches since its inception. YSL also highlights the important role lifesavers and surf clubs, along with the professional life guards, play in keeping Australian beaches safe and in creating Australian beach culture.
All existing members already play a significant role in YSL and with over 110,000 members in 304 surf clubs, it is guaranteed to be a massive celebration.
Surf Life Saving Australia and the state centres have been working together to develop a program of events which will be implemented right across the country. Some of the confirmed events so far include a travelling exhibition in partnership with the National Museum of Australia, official stamps and coins, the release of the definite history of surf lifesaving, national and state gala dinners and a curriculum based school surf safety education program.
Every Australian will have the opportunity to be involved in the Year of the Lifesaver, from simply attending one of these events, making a donation, purchasing an item of memorabilia or playing a more significant role by becoming a member of a surf club where you will have the opportunity to play a more active role in YSL.
